Abstract

Jar al-Allah al-Zamakhshari al-Mu’tazili is regarded as one of the most influential interpreters of the Holy Qur’an in the 6th century A.H. He explained lots of Qur’anic verses by his al-Kashaf interpretation. The introduction of his theological and interpretive can result in a familiarity with Islamic sciences. By examining his interpretive one can conclude that he has studied theology with rational approach. He considers the reason as independent in proving God and His attributes and he considers the revelation as just a remark or admonition. Based on Qur’anic verses, he considers reasoning in theological discussions as necessary and rejects any blind imitation in religious beliefs. He uses the Qur’anic verses to prove God by the proofs of human original nature and dispositon (Fitrat), contingency and necessity, temporally creation ex nihilio and the argument from design or order. In this paper his views on these subjects will be surveyed.
