Abstract

Human beings are creatures with free will, who are involved in determining their worldly and hereafter fate. A person's fate is influenced by factors such as beliefs, actions, environment, heredity, spiritual practices, and so on; however, human free will and determination prevail over all of these. Belief in the Day of Judgment is an important factor in shaping a person's fate, affecting both the worldly and afterlife destinies of believers and deniers. The present study seeks to answer the question of what role belief in the Day of Judgment plays in human destiny, based on the views of the interpreters of both Sunni and Shia perspectives, in the teachings of Surahs Al-Haqqah and Al-Ma'arij. A descriptive-analytical review of this issue shows that these two Surahs, which appear consecutively in the order of revelation and in the Holy Qur'an, were revealed in a similar context. In these two Surahs, Allah depicts the truth, greatness, and certainty of the Day of Judgment, drawing the attention of the audience by explaining the worldly and afterlife destinies of the two groups-deniers and believers. Just as the worldly fate of the deniers of the Day of Judgment is destruction and annihilation, for the believers, it is salvation and liberation. The afterlife fate of the deniers, after experiencing shame and regret, is Hell, while the afterlife fate of the believers in the Day of Judgment is the satisfaction and enjoyment of Paradise and divine pleasure.
