Descent-Based Interpretation as a Cultural Interpretation of the Qur'an (Focusing on the Works of Abdul Karim Behjatpour)

Abstract

The revelation of the Qur'an was gradual, and through this gradual revelation, the Prophet (PBUH) was able to transform an initial society from a low cultural level to a nation with such cultural excellence that it became the standard-bearer of the call for monotheism, ethics, and humanity across the world. However, what is the method of studying and understanding the Qur'an in order to achieve its cultural elements and the process of cultural transformation within the Qur'an? The main issue of this article is to achieve a “method for studying the Qur'anic culture,” which, according to the author, is best achieved through “descent-based interpretation” (Tafseer Tanzili). Of course, since focusing on the views of a descent-based interpreter offers a clearer path and more cohesive elements for achieving this goal, this research is based on the works of Abdul Karim Behjatpour. The method of this research is “ijtihadi”. Ijtihadi is a reliable and well-known method that has been used for centuries for referring to religious sources, and it has been recommended by scholars and interpreters of Islam. In this method, rational, logical, transmitted, historical, and theological elements are used according to the issue under investigation. Therefore, this research will draw on rational, logical, and other relevant analyses as needed. The findings of this research include proving the methodological identity of descent-based interpretation and discovering its methodological outcomes (solutions for deepening and expanding the understanding of the Qur'an, stages of the Qur'anic cultural transformation process, the formation of the Qur'anic issues network, the practical application of the Qur'an, and strategies for identifying and solving cultural harms) and content-related outcomes (transformational stages of the Prophetic community, developing a goal-setting approach for uncovering the intentions of God, and achieving a more accurate understanding of Qur'anic terminology).
