Abstract

One of the Quranic studies that has always been of interest to the Qur’anic exegeses and scholars is the analysis of the extraordinary aspects of the Holy Quran, especially in terms of its eloquence and rhetorical miracle. However, among the various aspects of this rhetorical miracle, the artistic and aesthetic dimensions have been less emphasized and are often limited to the conventional rules found in rhetoric books. On the other hand, Sayyid Qutb, as a literary scholar and Quranic interpreter, has a unique perspective on the beauty of the Quran, which has not been well articulated, and its distinction from other rhetorical analyses has not been highlighted. Therefore, there was a need for a comprehensive study on the distinctive aesthetic approach to the Quran in the view of Sayyid Qutb compared to earlier scholars in the field of literary Quranic exegesis. In this research, using an analytical method, the historical progression of understanding the beauty of the Quran is presented in three stages: the innate understanding, the scattered understanding of beauty, and the comprehensive understanding of rules. Then, the contributions of some figures before Sayyid Qutb are examined, and finally, the distinctive aspects of Sayyid Qutb’s perspective are compared with other scholars through several Quranic examples. The theoretical analysis of these differences is categorized into three main areas: the general approach of Sayyid Qutb versus the specific approach of rhetoricians, the lack of focus on rhetorical rules, and the differences in underlying structures. Afterward, the innovative nature of Sayyid Qutb’s aesthetic analysis in the view of later scholars and interpreters is discussed.
