Abstract

To establish and argue the issue of Imamate and the succession of the Prophet (PBUH), both theological-historical reasons and specific verses from the Holy Qur'an are cited. One of the most significant verses related to this topic in the contemporary period is the verse concerning the affliction of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). An examination of existing writings and articles on this verse reveals that the perspectives of some contemporary Shiite thinkers encompass approximately fourteen theological propositions. However, interpretations of this verse are marked by significant controversy. Therefore, it is essential to discuss and analyze the importance of this verse regarding Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) affliction regarding the issue of Imamate. This involves clarifying the historical development of references to this verse, particularly identifying which Shiite sources first discussed it in the context of Imamate, in which centuries, and tracing the evolution of these arguments over time. In this research, various Shiite sources were studied using a library-based methodology, revealing that referencing this verse to prove the Imamate is relatively recent and innovative. Over time, especially with the emergence of sectarian and theological disputes during the Middle Ages, references to this verse in the context of Imamate became increasingly diverse and multifaceted. In other words, early Shiite scholars and thinkers did not assign specific Imamite interpretations to this verse.
