Explaining the Difference in the Approach of Shia Narrative Interpretations to the Problem of the Difference in Readings in Light of the Contextual Conditions

Abstract

This article evaluates the differences of these interpretations' approaches to the problem of differing readings, using the descriptive-analytical method by reformulating well-known Shiite narrative interpretations and utilizing the concept of context. The research findings reveal that the objective of early commentators included in the narrations, which are tangentially linked to the subject of differences in readings, is to demonstrate the imprint of distortion in the Qur'an, not to take up the issue of differences in readings. Nevertheless, Hawizi and Faiz Kashani are authors of more recent narrative commentaries who, while including narrations of distortion, like the earlier commentators, mentioned the narrations in the area of difference of readings relevant to Majma ol-Bayan Tabarsi. Thus, considering the significant role of Sheikh Tusi and his approach to Tafsir al-Tabayan in addressing the narrations of different readings and their influence in his subsequent interpretations of the Qur'an, including Majma ol-Bayan, is a more useful way of understanding the reason for the difference of approach. The selection of Majmael al-Bayan as a source and the rejection of Tabayan by Hawizi and Faiz is a reason for them to mention these hadiths, like Tabarsi, from the point of view of differences in readings, as opposed to the Shaykh, who considers most of these hadiths to be an exegetical function.
