Abstract

Verse 55 of Surah Al-Ma’idah (the Verse of Wilayat) is one of the most important verses through which Shiites have argued for the immediate Imamate of Imam Ali (AS). However, opponents of this view, including Alusi, have cast doubt on it. Therefore, the present study, aiming to examine the Verse of Wilayat from the perspectives of Tabarsi and Alusi, seeks to answer the question of what views these two commentators held regarding the aforementioned verse. The research method is descriptive-analytical, and data collection was carried out using library resources. After examining the occasion of the revelation of the verse, the difference between Wali and Ruku’ was analyzed from their perspectives. The results show that Tabarsi interprets Wali as a guardian, while Alusi understands it as a helper and friend. Additionally, Tabarsi considers Ruku’ in its literal meaning that is, bowing in prayer, whereas Alusi interprets it as submission and humility. By examining the meanings of these words in dictionary sources, Quranic verses, and previous studies, it is concluded that Wali in the verse means guardian, and Ruku’ means bowing in prayer.
