Analysis of Cognitive Factors for Effective Utilization in Benefiting from the Guidance of the Qur’an, Inspired by Surah Al-Baqarah and Sermons from Nahj al-Balagha

Abstract

This study investigates the epistemic factors that facilitate access to the Qur'an’s layers of guidance, drawing upon Surah al-Baqarah and selected sermons of Imam Ali (AS) in Nahj al-Balagha. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, the research undertakes a comparative examination of relevant Qur’anic verses, statements by Imam Ali (AS), and their classical exegetical commentaries. The findings indicate that key epistemic elements—specifically, the recognition of adversarial forces (including Satan, the commanding soul [nafs al-ammārah], hypocrites, disbelievers, and worldly attachment) combined with certitude, faith in God, faith in the unseen, and faith in divine scripture—are critical to benefitting from the Qur’an’s guidance. Although practical dimensions such as worship and righteous deeds are also influential, these warrant separate investigation. The study concludes by identifying obstacles that impede engagement with this “divine banquet,” thereby proposing a clear avenue for future research.
