Abstract

Allamah Tabataba’i is one of the most prominent thinkers in the field of Islamic sciences. Among his notable works are his commentary on Bahār al-Anwār and his brief but insightful commentaries on a selection of hadiths from Usūl al-Kāfī. He authored commentaries on 88 hadiths from Bahār al-Anwār; however, after the initial publication, Ayatollah Borujerdi advised against continuing the printing and dissemination of the work. Additionally, Allamah Tabataba’i composed commentaries on a limited number of hadiths from Usūl al-Kāfī. Despite their brevity, these commentaries successfully addressed several complex theological and doctrinal issues. One of the most significant works in which Allamah Tabataba’i critically engages with the Shi‘i hadith corpus is his monumental exegesis of the Qur’an, Al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān. Given the high intellectual status of Allamah Tabataba’i among Muslim scholars and the foundational role of Al-Kāfī in Shi‘i tradition, the present study examines the commentaries and critiques he offers on Al-Kāfī within Al-Mīzān. The researcher has systematically collected and categorized these commentaries in order to analyze the nature of Allamah Tabataba’i’s engagement with the hadiths of Al-Kāfī.Throughout Al-Mīzān, Allamah Tabataba’i not only explains the hadiths of Al-Kāfī but also, in certain instances, attempts to diagnose their problematic aspects or reinforce them by citing parallel hadiths from other authoritative collections of the Imamiyyah tradition. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which Allamah Tabataba’i interacts with the hadiths of Al-Kāfī in his commentary on the Qur’an, offering a critical insight into his methodological and theological approach to the Shi‘i hadith corpus.
